Sara Schabas

Canadian soprano Sara Schabas’ performances have been praised as “beautifully sung and a treat to watch” (Schmopera), “haunting and nuanced” (Mooney on Theatre) and “youth and beauty personified” (Oakwood Register).

A recent graduate of Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts, Ms. Schabas has spent two summers as an opera fellow at the Aspen Music Festival, performing Candace (William Bolcom’s A Wedding) and Juliette (Roméo et Juliette). Ms. Schabas has been artist-in-residence with the Dayton Opera in Ohio, performing Papagena and covering Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Sister Catherine (Dead Man Walking), and as soprano soloist in Handel’s Messiah and Schubert’s Shepherd on the Rock with the Dayton Philharmonic.

Ms. Schabas has been a fellow with Toronto Summer Music Festival’s Art of Song, Stratford Summer Music Festival, and the Castleton Festival in Virginia, where she sang Mahler’s Fourth Symphony under the late Maestro Lorin Maazel. Her 2016/2017 season included recital appearances at Toronto’s Gallery 345 and the Arts and Letters Club, Frasquita in Carmen with the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra, and soprano soloist in six world premiere pieces in Soundstreams’ 21C New Music Festival.

This season, Ms. Schabas looks forward to debuts with Tapestry Opera as Henrietta Hugo in Bandits in the Valley, her solo recital debut in the Four Seasons Centre’s Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, and debuts as soprano soloist in Brahms’ Requiem with the Hart House Chorus and Vivaldi’s “Nulla in mundo pax sincera” with the Oakville Chamber Orchestra.

A native of Toronto, Sara Schabas holds an Honours Bachelor of Music in Performance from the University of Toronto, where she studied with Jean MacPhail, and a Master of Music from Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts, where she studied with Judith Haddon under the Siragusa Scholarship.
