The Don Valley, in 1850’s-60s Toronto, was run by an infamous gang. They were a bunch of lowlifes and criminals who had their fingers in various illegal pies, including prostitution, rum and opium running, and highway robbery. A number of women in the gang – prostitutes turned thieves – were the gang’s unofficial leaders. And they weren’t above killing for money: in 1859, they famously assassinated an MPP named John Hogan by beating him and then throwing him into the icy Don. Whisky Opera focuses on one of the gang’s most legendary members.
