Jacqueline explores the powerful legacy of the late virtuoso cellist Jacqueline du Pré. Composer Luna Pearl Woolf and Pulitzer Prize-winning librettist Royce Vavrek bring to life the story of the fiercely talented teenage cellist who defied all odds to become the best in the world, only to face a terrifying fight with a mysterious illness at the height of her fame. In this world premiere presented by Toronto’s Tapestry Opera, celebrated soprano Marnie Breckenridge is Jacqueline, and renowned cellist (and former du Pré protégé) Matt Haimovitz plays the role of Jacqueline’s cello.
Jacqueline is inspired by the structure and emotional landscape of Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto, and connected to the real life story of the then thirteen year old cellist Matt Haimovitz being hand-chosen by du Pré to be her successor. This beautiful and intimate piece for soprano and cello celebrates the magic, tragedy and triumphant legacy of the extraordinary Jacqueline du Pré.
