Hailed by the Washington Post as a singer with a “beautifully rich and spirited” voice, mezzo-soprano Taylor-Alexis DuPont is a Grand Prize Winner of the 2023 Lotte Lenya Competition, the recipient of the inaugural Rebecca Luker Award from the Kurt Weill Foundation in 2021, and was involved in the Grammy Award-winning production of Porgy & Bess with the Metropolitan Opera in 2020-2021. Closing out the 2024-2025 season, Taylor-Alexis joins the Denyce Graves Foundation as a soloist in their April showcase, Everything Old Is New Again, Opera Orlando as the title role in Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha, the Glimmerglass Festival for their 50th Anniversary Gala and later in their Summer 2025 season as Nurse/Mrs./Harriet P. in Sunday in the Park with George, and Sally in the world premiere of Cisneros/Bermel’s The House on Mango Street. Taylor-Alexis has performed with major American houses, including the aforementioned Metropolitan Opera, Washington National Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Opera Philadelphia, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Cincinnati Opera, the Glimmerglass Festival, Florida Grand Opera, Spoleto Festival, Prototype Festival, Virginia Opera and Sarasota Opera.
Performance highlights include Phoebe in The Passion of Mary Cardwell Dawson and Celeste/Songbird (cover) in Songbird (La Périchole) with Washington National Opera, Musetta in La bohème and Flora in La traviata with Florida Grand Opera, Emily/Angela (cover) in The Listeners with Opera Philadelphia, Reba/Young Mother in Taking Up Serpents and Archangel Gabriel in the world premiere of Damien Geter’s Holy Ground with the Glimmerglass Festival, Flora in La traviata with Cincinnati Opera, The Witch in Into the Woods with Union Avenue Opera, Kate in Pirates of Penzance and Mary Johnson (cover) in Fellow Travelers with Virginia Opera, the title role in Luisa Fernanda, Bessie in Mahagonny-Songspiel, L’enfant (cover)/Squirrel/White Cat/Shepherdess in L’enfant et les sortiléges and Hänsel in Hänsel & Gretel with the Florentine Opera, Moth in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Santa Fe Opera, Lel in The Snow Maiden and Prince Ratmir in Ruslan & Lyudmila with Bel Cantanti Opera, Dorabella in Così fan tutte with Opera NexGen, and one of the three Weird Sisters in Lady M with Heartbeat Opera.
DuPont possesses both a high affinity and aptitude for New Opera, having been involved in several world premieres. These include the roles of Makena in Black Coffee with Opera Theatre of St. Louis’ New Works Collective, Aubrey in The Rip Van Winkles with the Glimmerglass Festival, Lizzie (cover) in 10 Days in a Madhouse with Opera Philadelphia, one of the Solo Singers in Stinney: An American Execution with Prototype Festival, Mariah in You Do Not Recognize the Bodies in the Water at Opera America, and Hannah in Ruinous Gods with the Spoleto Festival. Her portrayal of Hannah was applauded for a “poignant” portrayal (Arts ATL), displaying “gorgeous gravitas” (Charleston City Paper). Taylor-Alexis holds degrees from Florida State University and Peabody Conservatory.
