Danika Lorèn and Gentle Freak preview OpenStudio and MainStage: Slaying My Demon Lover
A “demon lover” is a love that will not let go. Long after the relationship ends, the bond lingers, no longer a thread, but a chain, haunting new connections and clouding what matters most. This concert lingers in that liminal space where love poisons and possesses; where devotion becomes bondage.
Slaying My Demon Lover is both concert and ritual: a breakup spell, a collective exorcism. Inspired by Amanda Yates Garcia‘s memoir “Initiated” and her fusion of contemporary witchcraft and performance art, song is turned into spell and concert will become our circle cast. Together, we’ll witness the dark places heartbreak can take us; the messy, unflattering, human parts, and transform them into a ritual of forgiveness, release, and banishment.
In three acts, this performance descends into the shadow of love; of obsession and possession, of passion and entanglement, of banishment and release. Moving anachronistically through musical genres, we follow a unified arc from fixation to freedom.
